A huge increase in backflow device thefts has been recently occurring.  This is due to the ever-increasing value for scrap metals (i.e, brass, copper, aluminum, etc.) These thefts have been only on 2" devices and smaller, which are for the domestic water services to the buildings.  Most of these stolen devices did not have enclosures or cages around the backflow device.  Fire service backflow devices may soon follow suit in the very near future targeting the brass valve stems, by-pass backflow device and or meter.

We recommend you visually check your backflow devices to see if the domestic and irrigation backflow devices are protected with a lockable cage.  The fire service is applicable for valve stem protectors.  Being proactive could save a considerable amount of money, not to mention, the loss of water and possible non-occupancy for the building until water is restored.
